The real stuff is a tricky find. 🦇 Here's a cheap, easy, edible option.
Corn syrup
Chocolate syrup
Corn starch
Red food dye
Water
A closeable container: to store it
A bowl & spoon: to mix it up
A way to measure amounts: Scale or measuring cups
I can't find my original recipe. I’m not sure I ever trusted the ratios anyway; I always measured small amounts until the consistency & color was right, then scaled those up for a full batch. (Wish I’d kept better notes in those days.)
The starch helps reel it back from too shiny/translucent, the chocolate from too bright/red (adds that darkness in the thicker bits). So, I feel I started with the corn syrup, bit of red food dye, then chocolate syrup & bit of starch to bring it back to reality. Like mixing paint.
Nice thing is it’s water soluble (both for cleaning, & for if everything else is right but you need a thinner texture) & safe in most cases. Though, it is a sweet, sticky mess.
