I suspect Thomas Henry Huxley open_in_new didn't like thinking he was an atheist, so that crafty devil found a paradoxical way to say the same thing: agnostic.
OMG.
Both words have the prefix "a", meaning "without". Then, "gnostic" refers to knowledge of whether god exists, while "theist" refers to belief in god.*
Agnostic: Without knowledge of whether god exists.
Atheist: Without belief in god.
So, if someone asks "Does god exist?", & my answer is "I don't know.", then I'm probably agnostic...
& also atheist.
If I don't know whether god exists, then I can't also actively believe in him.
Example: If I don't know whether I have a parachute on my back, will I jump out of a plane? Not if I have a will to live! Because I don't actively believe I have a parachute.
Would that mean they might be... atheists?
🙈 🙉 🙊
Epistemological mischief...
Just identify however seems right to you, believe what you please, and as long as you're not harming anyone, don't let me nor anyone else tell you what to do nor who you are!
