“Mono…” means one. “Poly…” means more than one. “…gamy” refers to marriage. “…amory” refers to love. Romantic, no?

Examples

• Monogamy and polyamory are not opposites. Someone who is, or wants to be, married to only one person might also be in love with additional people. This tends to work best when the two spouses agree.

• Someone else might only love one person while in, or planning to be in, a marriage with multiple people. This is monoamory and polygamy. It’s something that a Mormon and a Muslim might have in common. Though, they’re not likely to meet at a bar.

• Someone who is polygamous and polyamorous hopefully has a lot of time and money.

• Someone who is monogamous and monoamorous might just now be wondering whether they actually are…
